Neela Biotech secures Henry Royce Institute grant

The grant funds a five-month feasibility study with Cambridge’s Aviation Impact Accelerator.

Neela Biotech has secured grant funding from the Henry Royce Institute for a feasibility study of its waste-to-fuel process, the University of Cambridge announced on 17 October 2025. The award amount was not disclosed.

The five-month project pairs Neela with the Aviation Impact Accelerator at Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory. The academic team will assess production economics and lifecycle emissions for the startup’s Controlled Microbial Upcycling pathway.

Neela uses microbial engineering to turn waste streams into fatty acids that can feed sustainable aviation fuel production. The study is intended to test how that pathway could work with existing biogas and refinery infrastructure and move it closer to commercial deployment.
