Volare converts food-industry side streams into insect protein, oil and fertiliser for feed and agriculture.
Turning side streams into ingredients
Volare rears black soldier fly larvae on food-industry side streams, then processes them into protein, oil and fertiliser. Its customers include pet-food and aquafeed producers seeking alternative ingredients.
The company controls the process from larvae rearing to finished ingredients. Its production approach combines insect biology with processing technology originating in research at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.
Industrial production in Finland
Founded in 2021 by Jarna Hyvönen, Tuure Parviainen and Matti Tähtinen, Volare has completed its first industrial-scale factory in Pori. Built inside a former printing facility, Volare 01 targets annual output of up to 5,000 tonnes of protein and 2,000 tonnes of oil as production ramps up.
Products using its ingredients include insect-based pet food and rainbow-trout feed. Volare also has offtake agreements, including with aquafeed producer Skretting, as it prepares to replicate the production model in further European facilities.
