Solid-refrigerant cooling systems that combine porous materials and carbon dioxide to move heat.

Cooling through materials science

Pascal develops refrigeration technology for manufacturers of cooling and heating equipment. Its system moves carbon dioxide through a porous solid material, transferring heat as pressure changes. Two cartridges alternate between absorbing heat and releasing it, creating a cooling cycle.

The Watertown, Massachusetts company grew out of research at Harvard. Its founders include Adam Slavney, Jinyoung Seo and Jarad Mason. The team combines materials development with engineering work on heat exchangers and refrigeration systems.

From prototypes to field use

Pascal is preparing a pilot with a multinational beverage company. As of October 2026, its first prototype is planned for early 2027, followed by more developed refrigeration units in 2028. The engineering programme aims to translate laboratory performance into equipment that can operate with conventional components.
