JAOPS joins JAXA-funded lunar robotics project

The Tohoku University-led consortium will develop technology for building infrastructure from lunar soil.

JAOPS is participating in Lunar PIONEER, a lunar infrastructure development project funded through JAXA’s Space Strategy Fund. A consortium announcement published on April 27 identifies JAOPS among the corporate partners working with Tohoku University.

The project’s grant was formally approved on March 30, 2026, following the consortium’s selection in October 2025. The amount allocated to JAOPS was not disclosed.

JAOPS will develop and test ground systems, supporting integration, simulation and mission rehearsals. The broader team will develop electron-beam technology for solidifying lunar soil and mobile robots that could help build landing pads and other infrastructure.

Tohoku University leads the consortium, which also includes Space Quarters, Hakusan Corporation, System Planning Research and Asteria ART. JAOPS provides mission-control software, infrastructure and operational services for spacecraft teams.
