illumion develops optical instruments that show how individual battery particles behave during charging and discharging, helping researchers and manufacturers understand battery materials.
Seeing materials inside a working battery
The Cambridge spinout commercialises charge photometry, an optical imaging technique for observing battery materials at single-particle resolution. Researchers use its illumionONE instrument to follow particles as a cell charges and discharges.
Research tools and industrial development
The technology builds on research by co-founders Clare Grey and Akshay Rao at the University of Cambridge. illumion is developing a further platform, illumionX, for industrial use cases such as development and quality-control decisions. The aim is to connect insights from individual particles with practical improvements in battery design and manufacturing.
