Newlight raises $9m seed to validate hydrogen retrofits on cargo ships
The funding will support injection hardware and open-ocean pilots for a system designed to cut fuel use in existing marine engines.
Improving combustion without replacing ship engines
Newlight’s retrofit injects hydrogen into existing diesel engines to improve combustion, aiming to reduce fuel use and emissions without requiring a vessel to replace its engine. The system is configured for each ship’s engine room and operating profile, then integrated with controls and monitoring.
The $9 million seed round will fund higher-throughput injection hardware, additional marine and fluid-dynamics engineering, and open-ocean validation pilots on commercial container vessels. Newlight says its system has been used on long-range commercial voyages with more than 20% lower fuel use and emissions, results the planned pilots will test across operating conditions.
