Helical Fusion selected for Gifu grant of up to JPY10m
The cost subsidy will support development of Helical Fusion’s liquid-metal blanket and divertor for fusion power plants.
Helical Fusion announced on June 2 that it had been selected for the Gifu Prime Startup Support grant, which provides up to JPY10 million for eligible costs through December 31, 2026. The programme covers up to two-thirds of qualifying equipment, materials and research expenses.
The company will use the support to develop a liquid-metal blanket and divertor. These components must extract intense heat from a fusion reactor while limiting damage to surrounding materials. Helical Fusion’s approach uses flowing liquid metal, aiming to improve heat removal, maintenance and plant life.
The work forms part of its Helix Program, which targets integrated demonstration with the Helix HARUKA device and practical power generation with Helix KANATA during the 2030s. Helical Fusion is building research infrastructure at the National Institute for Fusion Science in Toki, Gifu.
