A pulsed laser platform for fusion and defense
Xcimer is developing electron-beam-pumped excimer lasers that fire repeatable, high-energy pulses. The architecture is intended to scale to inertial-fusion power systems, where pulsed laser energy drives fusion fuel, and to directed-energy applications that require powerful, rapidly repeated beams.
The company has built and is operating its Phoenix laser test system to validate key elements of the architecture. Its September agreement with RTX will explore integrating and containerizing multi-kilojoule laser systems for defense; both the commercial fusion plant and defense systems remain in development.
