3Sonic is developing a portable 3D ultrasound system that scans a removed tumour in the operating room and helps surgeons assess whether its margins are clear while the patient is still in surgery. The device combines custom imaging hardware, specialized software and AI-assisted analysis to provide rapid feedback for cancer operations.
After a tumour is removed, the specimen is scanned with ultrasound and reconstructed as a high-resolution 3D image. The surgeon can inspect the tumour boundaries and estimate whether the surrounding surgical margin is sufficient while the operation is still underway. The system combines custom hardware, specialized imaging software and AI-assisted diagnostics and is designed for use in the operating room without an external tracking system.
Fast margin feedback could help surgeons decide whether further tissue should be removed during the same operation, reducing the chance that a patient must return for another procedure. The prototype has been clinically tested with oral-cancer patients, with ongoing work focused on clinical validation and commercialisation.
The intended users are surgeons and hospitals performing cancer operations, initially in settings where margin assessment can change the extent of surgery. 3Sonic reports a fully functional prototype and clinical proof of concept; in September 2026, BioInnovation Institute funding was described as supporting further product development and commercialisation.
