FabricNano raises $12.5m Series A for cell-free biomanufacturing

Atomico leads funding to scale enzyme-based alternatives to conventional chemical production.

FabricNano raised $12.5 million in Series A financing led by Atomico. Existing investors Backed VC, Hoxton Ventures and Entrepreneurs First participated, alongside angel investors including Emma Watson, Biz Stone and Alexander Moscho.

The London company develops cell-free biomanufacturing technology: instead of keeping living cells in the production process, it places enzymes on supporting materials to carry out chemical reactions. The approach is intended to help manufacturers make chemicals with less reliance on fossil fuel-derived processes.

The financing will support scale-up of its technology for producing materials used in plastics, personal care and other chemical products. FabricNano was founded in 2018 by Grant Aarons and Ferdinando Randisi.
