Alice & Bob secures $3.9 million ARPA-E award for rare-earth-free magnet research
The three-year project will develop quantum algorithms for discovering permanent magnets used in motors and turbines.
Alice & Bob has received a $3.9 million award under the U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA-E Quantum Computing for Computational Chemistry programme. The company will lead a three-year project to develop fault-tolerant quantum algorithms for designing permanent magnets that use no rare-earth elements.
The project brings together Alice & Bob, Los Alamos National Laboratory, GE Vernova’s Advanced Research accelerator and a research group led by Professor Emanuel Gull. The partners will combine quantum and classical simulation methods and assess opportunities for industrial materials discovery.
Alice & Bob aims to demonstrate a substantial reduction in simulation time on its quantum computers. Rare-earth-free magnets could help diversify materials used in electric motors and turbines.
