Learning precise manipulation from touch and demonstrations

Tangent Robotics combines purpose-built robot hands, light-based touch sensors and motor learning to perform delicate manipulation. A human operator demonstrates a task through fingertip tracking, generating training data from movement, vision and touch. Learned control policies then guide the robot through actions such as threading parts or installing a gear. The intended buyers are manufacturers automating assembly and maintenance work that needs more precise contact and force control than a simple gripper provides.

The company has built its two-finger TR01 and three-finger TR02 hands, and published autonomous task demonstrations trained from teleoperated examples. TR02 adds a palm and another finger to support stable grasping and moving an object within the hand. These are working development systems: Tangent says it is refining their speed and reliability and working with pilot commercial partners to turn the skills into full manufacturing applications. Wider factory deployment is the next stage.
