A toilet-mounted lift for homes and care settings

SedMed makes a toilet lift for older adults and people who have difficulty lowering themselves onto a seat or rising from it. The device mounts onto an existing toilet using the seat’s bolt holes. An adjustable gas spring supports controlled lowering and provides a lift when the seated user releases a lever. It needs no batteries or electrical supply, and the assistance can be adjusted to the user. The aim is to support independent toileting and reduce the physical lifting required from caregivers.

The device is commercially available for home use and healthcare settings, rather than a prototype awaiting launch. SedMed publishes installation guidance and a compatibility guide for standard toilets, with support for families and facilities. Investor 108 BioCapital says the product has been adopted across more than 40 hospital systems. Further hospital studies and a larger distribution network are planned; the investor’s discussion of India describes a potential future market.
