A Danish climate-technology startup developing a process that turns biogenic waste into drop-in maritime biofuel, biochar and clean energy.
Sagava is a DTU-originated startup developing a hybrid biomass conversion process. It turns biogenic waste into bio-oil for maritime use and co-produces biochar and hydrogen-rich syngas. DTU says the fuel can be used in existing marine infrastructure without upgrading or refining; the biochar also has an agricultural use. The company has moved from a pilot unit toward first-of-a-kind commercial scale, according to its company materials.
The target customers are shipping companies seeking lower-emission fuel that can fit existing vessels and bunkering infrastructure. Converting waste feedstock into usable marine fuel, while capturing carbon in a biochar co-product, is the operating proposition; this is a developing technology moving toward market entry rather than a mature fuel supplier.
